After much stress and planning we had Leo's first birthday party on Saturday. I think most of the stress stemmed from the fact that my baby is turning one, rather than planning a party for ~60 of our closest friends and family :-)
The day started out a bit scary. Leo woke up at 4:45 and by 5:45 I was walking him to Starbucks & Einsteins. He fell asleep in the stroller which meant he may not take a nap before the 11:00 start of his party. I was wrong. He took a huge nap before the party. Mike also forgot the smash cake and at the time it was probably the worst thing that could have happened. Luckily the cake place was on the way for a friend of mine so he brought it.
The party turned out amazing. It was a gorgeous day and the setting was a pavilion at Civic Green Park overlooking the fountains, where the kids had a blast playing. It was a little man themed party. Leo wore his newspaper boy hat and a tie. I had mustaches on straws and even made a banner with pictures of Leo where I superimposed mustaches on him. I loved Mike's dedication as he grew a real handlebar mustache for the party.
We had pizza (the guests ate all 10 of them) and beer.........and of course cake. Leo couldn't have done better if he practiced. We sang to him and put the smash cake in front of him. He was hesitant at first but then went full force eating the frosting, even going as far as putting his face right into it. Who needs hands right? Gwen was such a proud big sister and had a blast with her friends too.
I couldn't have asked for it to go smoother. The only real negative issue was that the party after us showed up at 11:00 (their party was at 2:00) asking if they could store their stuff in the pavilion. I of course said no. I didn't need my guests tripping over their stuff, but showed them an area where they could put it. Well it was in the sun and not good enough so they put everything on a bench and literally sat with it from 11-2, staring and checking their watches. They even went as far as to show up and stand in the pavilion prior to my 1:00 party end date. As you know, I can be a smidge b*tchy, so I made sure I took my sweet time cleaning up and finally left at 1:45.
